Flatbush is one neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City. The neighborhood consists of several subdivisions within central Brooklyn. Prospect Park borders it to the north, East Flatbush to the east, Midwood to the south, Kensington and Parkville (the 1920s sub-sections of Flatbush) to the west. The area was the home to an estimated population of 105,804, according to the 2010 United States Census. The trendy neighborhood is home to several notable institutions, including Brooklyn College.
Flatbush was chartered at the beginning as the first Dutch Nieuw Nederland city of colonial status. Midwest (or Midwoud or Medwoud). The town’s borders were once a part of the current Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Before its incorporation into the City of Brooklyn in 1894, Flatbush described the Town of Flatbush as encompassing a large region comprising Central Kings County extending east beyond the Queens County border and the Village of Flatbush, formerly the heart of the present community. The area was joined into The City of Greater New York in 1898. It was connected to the rest of the city by the subway system created by New York City’s establishment in the early 20th century. Flatbush was founded in 1651 and was one of the Dutch Nieuw Nederland cities within the colony of MidwestMidwest (or Midwoud or Medwoud) (derived from the Dutch words”med, “middle,” and “wood” -1651). Both names were used in the Dutch period as well as Midwood was an alternative name for Flatbush at the start of the 20th century. In a reversed fashion, Midwood is an area directly southwest of Brooklyn College and is often sometimes referred to as “Flatbush,”, especially in the cases of Orthodox Jews.
Culture
While Flatbush is predominantly African American and West Indian, there are also White Americans, Latinos, and Indian Americans living within its borders. The majority of residents are middle-class. But, middle-class and wealthy residents reside in Flatbush as their residence. The main commercial strip includes Flatbush, Church, and Coney Island Avenues. The area is home to Caribbean dishes, Soul food, and Chinese, Mexican, and South Asian restaurants. The majority of establishments are small-scale. However, bigger ones also exist. A significant aspect of the culture of Flatbush is the utilization of “dollar vans.” The “vans” are minibusses that provide less expensive alternatives to MTA. Residents pay $2 each time they travel across Flatbush Avenue from Kings Plaza to Tillary St., While many dollar vans operate illegally. However, they’re still significant in the transport system of Flatbush.
