MoMA PS1 is among the top art centers within the United States dedicated solely to contemporary art. It is located at Court Square in Queens’s Long Island City, New York City. In addition to its exhibitions, it also hosts activities such as events like the Sunday Sessions performance series, the Warm Up summer music series, and the Young Architects Program with the Museum of Modern Art. MoMA PS1 has been affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art since the beginning of January 2000. According to 2013, the museum has a population of around 200,000 annually.
What would eventually become MoMA PS1 was founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss 1971 under the Institute for Art and Urban Resources Inc. It was an institution founded to turn abandoned and inefficient structures in New York City into artist studios and exhibition spaces.
Conscient of the fact it was the case that New York was a worldwide art center and realizing that the traditional museums could not offer adequate exhibition spaces for works that were site-specific in 1971. Heiss formed a new traditional arts alternative group with architect and theater critic Brendan Gill called The Institute for Art and Urban Resources and began rehabilitating the abandoned buildings inside New York City.
In 1976, Heiss launched the P.S. 1. Contemporary Art Center in an abandoned Romanesque Revival public school building has exponentially expanded the capacity of the institution to show and studio. The building, constructed in 1892, was the first publicly-owned school within Long Island City until 1963 when it was shut down. The First Ward school was located was closed because of insufficient attendance. The building was converted into an industrial warehouse. It was in 1976 when Heiss established the P.S. 1. MoMA PS1 and the Museum of Modern Art signed a formal agreement on their relationship in 2000. Home to its own MoMA PS1 structure, New York City has also supported the merger. MoMA’s partnership with MoMA PS1 aims to promote the appreciation, enjoyment, understanding, appreciation, and research of contemporary art and culture to an expanding audience. The collaboration in exhibits, educational programs, and special projects allows both institutions to draw upon the strengths of each to build an innovative dialogue in culture. Both institutions have integrated their marketing for education, development financial planning, and membership and development departments. To commemorate this 10th anniversary, the union between the last P.S. 1. Contemporary Art Center and MoMA The museum was renamed MoMA PS1 in 2010. H&A Power Washing Long Island
