It was initially a name for an area that was more important than the neighborhood in place; Jamaica was settled under Dutch rule in 1656. The town was originally called Rustdorp before it was given its current name. According to English laws, in the following years, Jamaica became the center of the “Town of Jamaica.” It was the first County seat for Queens County and held that title from 1683 until 1788. It was also the first village to be incorporated, located on Long Island. When Queens was integrated into the City of Greater New York in 1898, The Town of Jamaica and the Village of Jamaica were dissolved. The area of Jamaica was able to resume its position being the seat of county government. Some locals join Jamaica’s neighboring communities to form an informal Greater Jamaica area encompassing most of the once-mentioned towns. H&A Power Washing NYC
