The long, high bluff that juts out over important sandy coves along North River was little used or explored by Lenape people. The combination of streams valleys, like the one through the valley through which 96th Street runs and wetlands towards the east and northeast could have shielded portions on Upper West Side from the Lenape’s controlled burnings. Of frequent ground, fires result in a thicker understory, and more fire-resistant trees, like American Beech.

Enclaves

In the 1900s, this part to the south of 67th Street was a thriving area populous with African-Americans. The name “San Juan Hill” was reputedly given in honor of the African-American soldiers. They played a significant role in Cuba’s San Juan Hill attack in the Spanish-American War. In 1960, the area was a rough and slum area with houses in tenements, demolition of which was put off to permit outdoor shots in West Side Story’s musical film. Following that, urban revitalization was the catalyst for developing the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Lincoln Towers apartments from 1962-to 1968.
